had assumed all would be smooth sailing when it came to breastfeeding. hadn't expected to run into supply issues and so when it happened i was caught quite unprepared. it was also half depressing to face up to the reality that baby just wasn't getting enough breast milk from me ... baby developing quite a bad case of jaundice didn't help either, as it felt like the lack of milk was causing the jaundice to hang around longer than usual.
introduced some formula milk at the end of 3 weeks because baby was just crying everytime i fed her. she's the kind of baby that's all serene and zen EXCEPT when she's hungry. then, she becomes demanding, fierce and impatient. also, she is a milk monster - she loves her milk and drinks like there's no tomorrow. friends who heard that she was downing around 32 oz of milk per day said she's drinking like a 6 month old!
at first it felt like a relief to see baby contented again, and then there were stabs of guilt i felt everytime i prepared a bottle of formula milk for baby ... it felt like i wasn't keeping my side of the bargain given that baby had a really good latch and strong suckle.
nonetheless, had continued to breastfeed where possible ... and baby's total milk intake was still more breastmilk than formula.
then came help in the form of domperidone which my gynae prescribed when he heard at my post-delivery check up that i had supply issues and pooh-poohed the fenugreek etc that i had been taking in a bid to boost supply. domperidone was the "ferrari", THE key to increased supply he said. well, he was right, and i should have nagged him for not prescribing it or mentioning it BEFORE i was discharged from hospital.
the day i started on domperidone, i managed to express 3-5 oz of milk consistently throughout the day ... what a breakthrough.
now baby is getting breastmilk for all her feeds except for one night feed. i might even be able to build up a decent stash of expressed milk over time.
lovely.
domperidone is now my second best friend, after epidural.
